25/02: Giacomelli and Pellicer won the Cima d'Asta and World Cup (IT)
Today the Italian athletes Guido Giacomelli and Gloriana Pellissier won the 16th edition of “Scialpinistica Lagorai – Cima d’Asta” in the upland of Tesino (Tentino, Italy), and at the same time, the individual Ski-Mountaineering World Cup. The hazardous weather conditions have not impeded the race of 360 participants, some of them took part in the Junior European Cup. The fallen snow, that caused a variation in the course, made the competition more fascinating but also more technical and difficult.
The best competitors started to distance themselves from the group just in the first moments of the race, and for the first kilometres nobody tried to follow them, but then facing the third difficult ascent Giacomelli, Perrier and Brunod were able to have a light margin to the other competitors.
Perrier and especially Giacomelli made the difference, and the Italian faced the downhill with a lot of involvement. There were fantastic off-piste in the fresh snow with a blanket of snow of 70 cm.
In the first uphill Perrier tried to outdistance Giacomelli, but the latter distanced him of 10 m. Then, in the last downhill, Giacomelli increased his speed to reach the finish line with a light margin to Perrier.
Thanks to the fourth position gained in Spain during the first race of the World Cup, Guido Giacomelli is on the top of the ranking and wins the World Cup.
Also the participant from Val d’Aosta, Brunod, mounted the podium, always among the best competitors. Among the women, Gloriana Pellissier led the race from the first moment, right after the start at Malga Sorgazza, and was able to pull ahead of Francesca Martinelli.
A forceful race for Pellissier who, as Giacomelli, is in a good position for the World Championship, that is going to start next Tuesday in Cuneo. Martinelli tried to reach her opponent but it was difficult because of the determination of Pellissier, who reached the first position of the podium.
Now we are waiting for the answer of the UIAA, the International Federation. In the temporary ranking of the World Cup, both, Martinelli and Pellissier are joint winners. The time and the score of today’s race should be determinating, and Pellissier could be the final winner.
The third position was gained by the Swiss Magnenat, who was able to stall off her countrywoman Mabillard.
Among the Espoir good race for Matteo Eydallin, first before the Swiss Marti and the Italian Holzknecht. Among the women the Swiss Troilett beat her Italian opponents Chanoinne and Cuminetti.
For what concern the Junior European Cup, among the junior good success for Bruno Mottini and Muriel Lavy (Italy) and among the cadets victory for Sigmund Thaler (Italy) and Martina Dobosova (Slovakia).
The work of the committee had been enormous. Weather conditions and the exceptional blanket of snow required a lot of big efforts for the organisation. A big satisfaction to having carried out this sporting event, that seemed impossible until the eve.
